Animal Magnetism is a bibliography of the literature of animal magnetism, early hypnotism, and psychical research; about one-third of the entries are annotated. The volume was meant to serve as a reference work for those who are interested in these areas and the influence of the literature on the development of psychological ideas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
"This masterly guide to the international hypnotic literature...is another extremely valuable volume in the series sponsored by Kraus International Publishers under the general editorship of Robert H. Wozniak which are devoted to Bibliographies in the History of Psychology and Psychiatry. Current and future scholars will be eternally grateful to them and to Adam Crabtree for this production."
-Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences
"For anyone interested in the historical origins of animal magnetism, hypnotism, spiritualism, and psychical research, this book is a veritable gold mine of information....the work contains just about everything of significance on animal magnetism and the impact Mesmer's discovery had on the developing sciences of psychology, medicine, and parapsychology....Considering how many well-nigh inaccessible books had to be assembled, read, and digested, and in how many foreign languages, once can begin to grasp something of the prodigious amount of labor that went into the project. That Crabtree could bring the whole project off with so few hitches is a tribute to his fine qualities as a bibliographer and scholar."
-Journal of Parapsychology
"This scholarly tour de force is perhaps not a book many will need, and it is certainly a book only a few will be able to afford. But one can at least be grateful that it's there, just in case, even if one does have to go to the library to gain access to it....Crabtree's bibliography is a splendid achievement."
-Journal of the America Society for Psychical Research
"...Crabtree compiled what is in my judgment the best bibliography of animal magnetism and hypnotism."
