Love is the Lesson

Love is a phone call that keeps you awake
Tossing and turning, you feel your heart break
By morning you learn it was all a mistake
And you hope that's the last of its kind. (spoken) But no...

The next time it happens, you're a little more ready
Your eyes are quite dry, your legs are quite steady
But your thinking's becoming increasingly petty
When this thought comes into your mind:

He's the one you've looked after through good times and bad
You know every secret he ever had
You've helped him to fly and he's under your wing
And loving him makes your heart sing

Love is a beer you grab after work
So she can complain he's ten kinds of a jerk
You share your concerns, you offer advice
You tell her to leave him because he's not nice.

The next time you see her, there's a new jerk in tow
Has she learned nothing from all that you know?
You can't take any more, you head for the door
Then you remember the price.

She's the one you've looked after through good times and bad
You know every secret she ever had
You've helped her to fly and she's under your wing
And loving her makes your heart sing

Love is the hours you spend in your car
Driving from home to wherever they are
He's lost in the storm, too far from warm
She's drunk in some honky-tonk bar (spoken) and when you find them

You give him the lecture about jumper cables
You give her the warning about waiting tables
You're madder than hell and just starting to yell
When you recall who they are.

He's the one you've looked after through good times and bad
You know every secret she ever had
You've helped them to fly and they’re under your wing
And loving them makes your heart sing

Love is the lesson we're put here to learn
To love with no thought of love in return
Loving is giving, never siezing control
You offer your heart and you get back your soul.

Love is the lesson that comes through the pain
Time spent in the struggle is time you regain
Anger can't last, and troubles will pass

And love, only love, will remain
